The liquid metal technology brought to science by Excillum is a major breakthrough in microfocus X-ray generator technologies. The liquid metal jet produces a smaller and more brilliant X-ray beam than any other conventional X-ray source. Other than rotating anodes, the MetalJet generator does not require a huge cooling system to keep the anode from melting - the anode already is molten. Only small amounts of liquid metal dissipate the heat generated by the electron gun hitting the molten metal jet very efficiently. Most typically, an alloy consisting of gallium and indium produces X-rays with 9.2 keV energy (1.35 Ang. wavelength), but alloys for higher energies are available as well. For protein crystallography as well as other X-ray fields, the Excillum's MetalJet D2+ 70kV is the dream machine when combined with a DECTRIS hybrid photon counting detector like the EIGER2 R 4M or the PILATUS4 R 1M and the mardtb goniostat. This truely is the ultimate data collection system with no equivalent in the market!

COMPONENTS

MetalJet D2+ 70kV X-ray Generator:
Excillum D2+ 70kV MetalJet microfocus X-ray generator operating at 250 Watts (70 kV, 3.5 mA) and with 2 usable ports, typically producing a  spot with a size of approx. 20 by 20 µm or smaller at the source. The generator does not require special water and electrical installations. Other models of the MetalJet generator are available, e.g. an entry level version using the same liquid metal technology but a simpler elecron focussing device and hence smaller X-ray flux.
AXO optics X-ray Optics:
State-of-the-art AXO multi-layer optic producing a spot size at the sample of < 150 by 150 µm FWHM. Other configurations, e.g. for a parallel beam are available on request.
EIGER R4M pixel detector X-ray Detectors:
mardtb desktop beamline Goniostat:
mardtb “desktop beamline” multi-purpose goniometer system, optionally with the “easymount” extension or the brand-new marxps crystallization plate scanner addition.
Oxford Cryosystems 800 Cryo-cooler:
Optional Oxford Cryosystems “Cryostream 1000” low temperature unit.
marLiN2 LN2 refill system LN2 refill system:
Optional marLiN2 automatic LN2 refill system
Radiation enclosure Table top and enclosure:
A functional and stable table with plenty of space for all electronics and attachments. Optional table top radiation enclosure.
Mobile apps Mobile apps:
Apps for iOS and Android to operate safety control system, i.e. open/close shutters and turn on/off of X-rays.

HIGHLIGHTS

INCREDIBLE BRILLIANCE

Even very small samples will receive enough X-ray photons - as on a synchrotron!

DEPENDABLE

Every single component of the system is renowned for its reliability, the one for the DECTRIS detectors, the mar345 detector and the mardtb goniostat being proverbial.

PERFORMANCE

Let’s face it: would you have believed that a generator running at 250 Watts can beat another one running at 2500 Watts?

DUAL PORT SUPPORT

Our safety setup includes dual port use right from the beginning. If you want to use both ports of the X-ray source, you don't need additional hardware!

NO ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS

The entire system can be used on three-phase 220/110 V wall sockets with a 16A fuse.

NO WATER INSTALLATIONS

Cooling of the liquid metal anode is accomplished by a air/water heat exchanger that ships with the system. No other water cooling required!

LOW POWER CONSUMPTION

The generator runs at 70 kV / 3.5 mA, i.e. 250 Watts!

NETWORK CONNECTIVITY

The generator and the safety control system are fully hooked up to the network and can be operated from remote computers.

MOBILE APP

marXperts provides mobile apps for iOS and Android to operate the safety control system.

COMPACT DESIGN

The footprint of the entire system is 1.7 x 1 m². Basically, it will fit anywhere in your lab.

LOW NOISE

Due to limited cooling requirements, the noise generated by the system is far inferior as the one from rotating anode generators

PERFORMANCE

The generator delivers a very small beam with such a high brilliance that even very small crystals sized < 50 µm will see enough X-ray photons. This is achieved by a highly optimized combination of source and optics parameters. Please read the application notes for further details!

It becomes your dream machine when combined with a DECTRIS hybrid photon counting detector like the EIGER2 R 4M or the PILATUS3 R 1M and the mardtb goniostat. This truely is the ultimate data collection system with no equivalent in the market!

APPLICATION NOTES

We have carried out some very exciting experiments with lysozyme, trypsin and thaumatin. Data were collected up to atomic resolution (1.0 Ang.). Superb data quality allowed for solving structures ab-initio using sulfur-SAD phases. Please download application note mar.AN29May18: "Atomic resolution data collection with the PILATUS3 R 1M detector on a metaljet X-ray source" to learn about the details!
